Lisa drove home, emptied out.

Inside her house she gave Liam one of the cookies. She showed Rudy the bag of cinnamon bread, and his eyes lit up, and he gave her a thumbs-up from flat on the floor, where Liam sat cross-legged beside him, breaking the cookie into bits and cackling.

“Where’d you go?” he asked.

“Just out for a drive,” she said. Her voice chirpy, and not quite her own.

He didn’t ask her about where she’d bought their treats. “Did you get enough time?”

She sat on the couch beside them. Liam rose and toddled to her and handed her a chunk of cookie, moistened from his mouth.

“Thank you, sweetie,” she said. “That’s very kind.”

She said, to Rudy, “I think so. I think so for today.”
